Any advertising above for ETS is NOT accepted by us as we are AGAINST ETS because of the side-effects
January 3 2003 - Here is a good link about peripheral nerve rerouting used for CNS repairs. It's information on the intercostal and other nerves and what I believe is Dr Lin's method. Thanks to Winsa. Please go to: http://www.healingtherapies.info/peripheral_nerve_rerouting.htm"
January 10 2003 - This is a good website explaining different types of donar nerves. Thanks Benson. Please go to: http://www.microsurgeon.org/concepts_in_grafting.htm
January 12 2003 - On the Web there is a published test called the Walter Cannon Test. Cannon performed a surprising series of experiments on a number of cats and dogs which put into perspective the significance of all these independent studies. He removed the complete sympathetic chain of autonomic ganglia. It was quite amazing that the animals could survive perfectly well for an indefinite period with the complete system down. One cat was maintained for 3.5 years in good health. When autopsied at this point, the abnormalities were few. The mammary glands showed some atrophy, and the thyroid gland had some abnormal signs. There was also a slight reduction in basal metabolism (~ 10%). One cat was sympathectomized shortly before giving birth, and she successfully nursed one of her young. Another cat gave birth to 3 litters after many months of sympathectomy, although she couldn't lactate. Sympathectomized males, however, are infertile, because the ejaculatory reflex fails!
However, if the animals were put under any stress, the effect of sympathectomy was VERY apparent:
In all cases, they died much sooner than control animals. The internal milieu essentially loses the ability to buffer itself against the external challenges. Although they could survive indefinitely in the controlled environment of the laboratory, they would have no chance of surviving in the wild. The other point, which may be obvious from the intricate interrelationships among the homeostatic mechanisms, was that as one system was breaking down, it led to other systems following close on its heels - gases, ions, nutrients, body temperature etc, are all interrelated. That's why it is so difficult to regain control once the body goes into shock (as we saw in an earlier overhead). As you try to restore one thing, something else jumps off course. It's amazing that the autonomic nervous system is able to prevent that happening over the course of your whole lifetime. Thanks so much to Greg for finding this link.

You have to scroll about half-way down to find the test
January 17 2003 - the first paragraph may lend an idea on the concept of the 'flap method' preferred by Dr Lin. Thanks to Winsa for this informative link.

February 22 2003 - (written by Morgan Carlsson) An ETS Lawsuit come up in Malmo Sweden 15-16-17 January. Two members in FFSO, Yvonne Jonasson and Jimmy Olsson, has sued ETS a Doctor from a hospital in Sweden.
The lawsuit was a re-trial of a lawsuit originally lost last year due to the expert witness of the defence, Professor Meyersson, who had a somewhat limited knowledge about the human sympathetic nervous system. Meyersson is a doctor of the old school and his view on the human nervous systems reflects that, which he again demonstrated during last week's trial. He does not believe that a damaged ganglion like T2 can have a major influence on the whole sympathetic nervous system and cause an imbalance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic system. Side effects like lowered stamina does not exist accordingly to him and he sees side effects not scientifically proved as non-existing. He stated that searching though all existing published medical papers he found no evidence of other side effects than CS, Horner's and Raynaud's Syndrome.
It's worth paying attention to that Meyersson himself has done about 20 ETS operations and him claiming that out of 100 people having an ETS operation done at the Hospital in Sweden, none have ever complained about side effects. As a matter of fact we do have 3 FFSO members who were operated at this hospital and who now suffer from severe side effects. This particular hospital is also the hospital where a women, Jane Grahn, died during an ETS operation.
Another expert witness, Professor Ulf Haglund, who clearly believes in ETS side effects, claimed that more people than the statistics show see side effects and that these are of a disastrous nature to the individual being hit by them.
As we now have lost the latest trial we now intend to appeal to the Supreme Court and if necessary go to the European Union Court. I'd like to encourage all suffering from ETS side effects not to give up and I assure you that I and FFSO will continue to fight for justice in these matters.
Morgan Carlsson, Chairman of FFSO
(from a swedish article about the trial)The article talks about the swedish woman Yvonne Jonasson who is one of the two persons in question here and how chocked she is due to the outcome of the trial. She had been suffering from a pain in her elbow for years and was offered a ETS, just as the one done for HH, to get rid of her pain. After having it done her life changed immediately as she got severe compensatory sweating, dry skin, lowered stamnia, heartproblems, depressions etc. She went from being an overall happy person to real miserable. Yvonne Jonasson is quoted for telling how she was not informed about possible side-effects, and that she would never have had the operation done had she known. The operating surgeon claims to have informed her on side-effects and it's mentioned in some medical papers in her case that information was given. The information given has been one of the key isssues in the trial just as well as Yvonne Jonassons claim that the operation should never have used in a case like hers. The court found that Yvonne Jonasson could not prove any malpractice from the surgeon and that it was not, from a medical standpoint, incorrect to use ETS in her case. This and the first original trial has cost Yvonne around 25.000 US dollars but she plans to keep fighting and appeal to the surpreme court. The outcome in the case of the other swedish person was as in the case mentioned above.
It's worth mentioning that the trials, as I read it, were not directly against the surgeon but what in sweden is called "Landstinget". As I understand it Landstinget is a local medical/health authority present in each county district in Sweden.
Back to Morgan and FFSO again. The present trials were lost for now but in case some of you have not been following what has been going on in Sweden I want to let you know that Morgans and FFSO's work overall seen has been very successful. Due to Morgans work there now is a law in Sweden that says that no one under the age of 18 can have an ETS, there's been a big national debate on ETS' initiated by Morgan which has cut down the activity of the ETS industry in Sweeden and so not so many rush 'blindly' into having ETS done. Also a lot of those persons who have been all alone with their side-effects, being told by the the docs that they are hypochondriacs, now know and understand their health problems a lot better. There are a lot of extremly friendly and helpful people in the ETS scene, but no one has done what Morgan has done. Without doubt he is the direct cause fewer people now sit back with a miserable life due to severe ETS sideeffects.

MEDICAL JOURNAL - ENDOSCOPIC THORACIC SYMPATHECTOMY SIDE EFFECTS
April 1 2001 - Yoga can be a very healthy way of getting some energy back for ETS side-effect sufferers. It is also very good for pain relief. The aim of the yoga techniques is to get the best result using the minimum of energy. However if you believe you have a condition which affects your health seek advice from a qualified yoga teacher. Those being treated for heart conditions or hypertension benefit greatly. Forward bending should be avoided by those with hiatus hernia. Severe lung conditions will cause tissue damage, so the stronger breathing techniques should be avoided, but quiet natural breathing should be practiced every day. But yoga is a very gentle form of exercise that can generally practiced at home on a mat or carpet. There have been some emails sent to me regarding weight gain. This should be a very good way of slowly getting into regular exercise and increasing your metabolism. Please go to www.yogasite.com
April 8 (reported March 16) 2003 -
From Morgan Carlson: "I am so sorry to tell one more woman has died in a ETS operation in Sweden! She died in Carlanderska hospital in
Gotenburg". You can see the article at: http://www.gp.se/gp/jsp/Crosslink.jsp?d=119&a=120611
"Below is a word by word, sentence by sentence translation of an article found in todays (saturday, march 15 ) news paper, Gôteborg Posten. Sentences in (( )) are my comments. I can not guarantee that this translation is 100 % correct so please consult Morgan if you have specific questions.
The reporter on this article, Karin Mattisson, is doing a series of articles on ETS, the sceptic angle being in focus. I strongly suggest that those of you ( which includes myself ) who had ETS in Sweden and now suffer from severe side effects contact her on karin.mattisson@gp.se and tell your story, or shortly summ up your story and offer to help by telling about your individual case should she be interested".
Translation:
Controversial surgical procedures stopped.
Another young woman died after an excessive hand sweating operation. Carlanderska hospital will now stop performing the risky surgical procedures.
GÖTEBORG:
The woman was suffering from excessive hand sweating and had after consulting the doctor decided to have ETS done. She was operated end of januar in the private hospital Carlanderska. The surgical procedure (ETS) went without any complications says the surgeon, Christer Drott, who performed the operation. But 8 hours later the woman was found dead in her bed. Despite resuscitation attempts her life could not be saved.
The reason for her death is still not known. According to Christer Drott it’s a mystery to everybody involved. “We are shocked and I can only speculate on the reasons. Maybe she was predisposed to a disorder that we could not forsee, but the investigation will shed light on that.”
The case has been reported to the police and the forensic investigation is expected to last another few weeks. Socialstyrelsen ((national Swedish health authority)) is involved in the investigation
due to the case being reported accordingly to Lex Maria ((as I understand it a rule/reporting system in Sweden that is/must be used in cases like this to report incidents to Socialstyrelsen))
Reported 6 times.
At the same time a number of cases in regards to excessive hand sweating operations have been reported to HSAN ((HSAN is a Swedish national authority which assesses medical negligence)). Christer Drott himself has been reported 6 times and was given an “erinran” which is the mildest form of a disciplinary reprimand.
Carlanderska is one of the few swedish hospitals that still performs excessive hand sweating operations. Earlier a death related to this surgical procedure has occurred. On Karolinska Hospital the surgical procedures were stopped after a woman died from haemorrhage during surgery.
Even Sahlgrenska Hospital has stopped doing these operations, pointing out the severe side effects that many patients report.
Why didn’t you stop doing this type of surgical procedure?
”We have earlier discussed to minimize the amount of patients operated. You can not close your eyes on side effects existing that are troublesome to quite a few people. But we never had any serious or life threatening effects due to these surgeries. And so far nothing shows that this incident has to do with the ETS surgical procedure” .. says Anders Falk, chief senior consultant at Carlanderska Hospital.
While performing an excessive hand sweating operation the surgeon enters the chest cavity and divides nerves that affects the ability to sweat.
Carlanderska Hospital has now suspended all operations until the result of the investigation is present. The surgeons who work at Carlanderska also do surgery on Borås Hospital. Also there no excessive hand sweating are done at the moment.
Is it time to stop this kind of activity?
”That question must be thought about. This incident for sure motivates a discussion about this kind of activity and the continuation of it”.. says Anders Falk from Carlanderska Hospital.
7000 underwent surgical procedure.
More than 7000 patients were operated since 1987. Until a few years ago Carlanderska had about 300 patients a year. The young woman travelled from another Nordic country to undergo this surgical procedure. The amout of patients from foreign countries have become less. But Christer Drott occasionally goes to London to perform excessive hand sweating operations.
“After this death we have informed patients who are waiting to have the operation done. You could expect them to regret their decision, but they don’t. They want us to get back in touch with them when the result of the investigation is here. I guess that shows a bit about how tormented
these persons are"
Facts.
6 Deaths.
6 documented deaths in relation to excessive hand sweating operations are known worldwide. In Sweden two cases are known. The one payed most attention to, when a 38 year old woman died at Karolinska, had the effect that several big hospitals stopped performing excessive hand sweating operations.
More than a hundred persons have claimed compensation via the patient insurance. 28 were given compensation. The husband of the 38 year old woman has fought for compenstaion from the Landstinget ((some form of medical authority present in each country district in Sweden)). January this year he got a refusal.

April 11 2003 - The ETS symposium is being held from the 29th - 31st May 2003 in Germany. (Dammit...I wish I could be there!) Please check out this site www.isss.net/ and come with ideas please!
May 5 2003 - An Irish newspaper has published an article about a patient who has died as a result of a medical procedure - sources say it is ETS surgery once again. The headline reads "Top Injuries Lawyer Dies After Minor Operation."
His name was Alan Synnott and he was in his early 40's.
Yet another person has died from resulting complications of this 'minimally-invasive procedure'. This seems to be the 9th person who has died as a result of complications from ETS.
May 31 2003 - Madonna has written to many Institutions in Australia, including proposed reviews of ETS in Australia. Morgan and FFSO have researched continually for evidence of side-effects with ETS/ESB. Patients have shared their personal and private stories on this site and the boards. Surgeons such as Dr T and Dr Lin have admitted there are side-effects. Together we have worked as a team and finally there is promising news. I have just received a letter from the 'Australian Safety and Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures - Surgical' and they will "undertake a systematic review of [ETS]" and "warrant it urgent attention".
June 30 2003 - As previously mentioned ASERNIP-S is currently determining whether to review the procedure of the sympathectomy. It does appear however that another health technology assessment group may already be doing this. The details of the review are available on the web and are as follows: "Interventions for localised excessive sweating" (protocol). http://www.update-software.com/clibng/cliblogon.htm
An article was printed in the newspaper, Gotesborgs-Posten, which relates to a young Norwegian woman who died shortly after having ETS done at Carlanderska hospital in Sweden about six months ago.
August 30 - There will be an FFSO meeting coming up for all members and their invited guests on September 13, 2003. We have the good news that an invited representative from Australia will attend. We are now in the process of raising funds for this representative's flight. As per usual, Morgan Carlsson is working himself so hard to organise this, and still fits in the time to comfort fellow 'sufferers'. Morgan has requested I post the information up on my site. I'm sorry about the delay, but i'm visiting another country and don't have access to the internet all the time.
Invitation to debate meeting
FFSO is a Swedish organization, which represents the interests of people disabled after having an Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) operation. In our view, ETS doctors refuse to take responsibility for their actions, nor do they listen to those of their patients who basically had their lives destroyed by ETS. We believe financial interests by the individual medical doctor to be the cause of this unethical behavior. We invite any individual or organization that wishes to challenge those beliefs to participate in an open discussion with the members of FFSO.
Because you are in some way associated with ETS, perhaps as a doctor, official of the health care sector, or journalist, etc., FFSO invites you to participate in the meeting which will be held at http://www.lansmuseet.varberg.se/ on 13 September in Varberg, Sweden, 16:00/4 pm to 19:00 /7 pm. If you would like to attend, please let us know by going to FFSO’s website http://home.swipnet.se/sympatiska/index3.htm Click on the link to contact us and leave your name, the name of the organization you represent and the best way to contact you should it be necessary. The deadline for acceptance is 1 of September; we look forward to hearing from you.
Sadly, Jane Grahn was the first one who died in an ETS operation in Sweden, leaving behind her husband, Peter Grahn and their 3 children.
We feel also very sorry for the 33 year old Norwegian woman who died after an ETS operation at Carlandeska hospital in Gothenburg, operated by Christer Drott.
October 2003 - I have come across articles by Clauss/Drott, stating that there is still no evidence of side effects. This will be opposed by a very well known researcher in scientific circles in Australia. Stay tuned.
I also promised to publish the Lin/Teleranta article, but due to internet access and being away from home, I have not been able to access my copies. However, I have noted that the articles have been published on the Ezy board in the Reversal section. The patient who published that was too quick for this slow turtle.
I've recently been told be a French patient that a French Surgeon is now being trained by Dr Teleranta to deal with the growing demand in France to reverse ETS. The surgery, apparently paid for by by the French government for French citizens. I will update about this later. I also have spoken to a Canadian ETS patient who has received a grant from the Canadian Government to have his Reversal paid for. Again, I will update more about his later.
December 2003 - There are some more testimonials added to the Reversal and ETS testimonial section. Anne will now manage the Treatment section. Asernip-s is still working closely with us, but We have recently been advised that the Medical Services Advisory Committee are doing a review on hyperhidrosis so ASERNIP-s have had to put theirs on hold. It is not yet on their website but i'm in contact with them now.
February 10 2004 - This site has been down for a while due to lack of support. It will now run with updates on a regular basis, due to the need for as much information as possible for patients. Thank you to all who support this site.
I have recently heard the Irish government may cover the Reversal, but i'm yet to confirm this.
There is some information in the media recently about Therapeutic cloning: (a.k.a. Somatic cell nuclear transfer or research cloning): This starts with the same procedure as is used in adult DNA cloning. The resultant embryo would be allowed to grow for perhaps 14 days. It's stem cells would then be extracted and encouraged to grow into a piece of human tissue or a complete human organ for transplant. The end result would not be a human being; it would be a replacement organ, or piece of nerve tissue, or quantity of skin. The first successful therapeutic cloning was accomplished in 2001-NOV by Advanced Cell Technology, a biotech company in Worcester, MA.
Perhaps the above is relevant to regenerating damage to the sympathetic chain.
February 19 2004 - I have recieved information from the MSAC in NSW, Australia. They have received a request to review hyperhidrosis. The estimated time frame for completion would be 12 months. The MSAC Website will be updated with the progress of this review. At this point ASERNIPs in South Australia, because they have been advised that the Medical Services Advisory Committee will be doing a review on hyperhidrosis, will put their review on hold. ASERNIPs however, will certainly remain in contact with MSAC. Professor Guy Maddern and ASERNIPs have remained in contact with me regarding side-effects, which reflects a true professionalism. The MSAC site is at:
http://www.health.gov.au/msac/
March 9 2004 - The meeting will go ahead in Sydney on Good Friday, 9 April 2004. All are welcome. Thank you to all who have responded so far. It should be an excellent opportunity for us all.
April 3 2004 - Due to urgent personal reasons I have cancelled the Sydney meeting. It will be resceduled for May.
Professor Maddern of ASERNIPs has updated me this week about the MSAC review of 'Treatment of hyperhidrosis of the axillae'. They have contacted the secretary and they have said the process is underway with the review likely to be completed early next year. I will keep in contact with them to follow this up again.
August 13 2004 - I have been told by ASERNIPs that they have spoken to the MSAC Secretariat and it seems that 'Treatment of hyperhidrosis of the axillae' has been withdrawn. The reason for this is that the original main purpose of the review was to look at the use of Botox in this condition (and comparing it to several surgical options) but they have now realised that this should be processed through PBAC and not MSAC. So the company marketing Botox will be sent a letter and if they want to apply to PBAC for assessment...they can.
However, ASERNIPS are still keen to do this review but now have other commitments so they will put it back on their priority list and then let us know when they are free to begin the review of 'Treatment of hyperhidrosis of the axillae' - hopefully by early in the new year.
Once again ASERNIPs are in constant contact with us and we thank you.
August 19 2004 - Unfortunatly ETs is performed on children. There is a video promoting this procedure with a young American girl.
Please go to: http://www.hyperhidrosisusa.com
Please click on the picture of Rachel, 10
and then ets-videos.
August 26 2004 - I had a phone conversation with Professor Guy Maddern and the first world wide controlled trial should start by the end of the year. I will be sent a protocol to confirm if this appropriate. I will email this protocol to all the people i've worked closely with over the last few years. It will be our only chance to get this right. As the Prof said, "if we leave something out of the protocol then there is no turning back, because we use alot of time and resources in this trial". So I will be in contact with a few people at the end of the year to go over it with a fine toothed comb.
I was fortunate enough to attend the British meeting of ETSers last year. Gigs has worked hard to set it up and he's started a site at www.noetsuk.com. If there are any Brits out there, he is the best person to contact regarding support. Cheers!
November 29 2004 - Gigs has organised a meeting in London for ETSers and post-ETSers who've had the Reversal. The meeting will be held at the Radisson Edwardian Berkshire Hotel, 350 Oxford Street from 1pm on Saturday 4th December. I suggest everyone who can attend does. It's worth it!
I've had the opportunity to meet another Aussie guy, Pete, who's had ETS and he'll be in England on the 19th. Anyone who lives near Kent, who can meet up with him and can tell him about the Reversal would be appreciated! Btw...his 'surgeon' who I met up with only in July told me he knew of no-one who was unhappy with ETS. Pete told me himself that he was very unhappy and told him so early this year! It's not very professional is it. I wish Pete the best and I know we'll all support him and his concerned girlfriend through this difficult time.
God Bless to Nadine and Richard who are mother and son, and have just returned from Italy after a Reversal. I love to see the support, not only from girlfriends, but from the Mum's out there.
January 28 2005 - There will be a meeting in Sydney on February 26th at 10 am at the El Rancho Hotel, Epping Road MARSFIELD. The meeting will be held to discuss ETS side effects, the Reversal, alternative treatments and the Protocol for the controlled trial. Please email Meg if you wish to attend.
April 22 2005 - I am glad to say there have been two meetings this year. I thank Peter and Timbo for making the effort to meet up. They both contributed alot to the meeting by giving me information I wasn't aware of. Timbo told me about alternative treatments for flushing which have helped him considerable including photoderm and botox...I will add those details to the Treaments section. I also want to thank Gigs and Si (among others) for continually responding to people who need help. I am so busy lately that I haven't had time to respond quickly to people and I apologise. We aim to build up the amount of people attending the meetings so we can form a larger network. I congratulate Gigs for making a success of the meetings in Britain where not only do we share information with each other, but we have also formed firm friendships.
May 18 2005 - There will be another meeting coming up at the beginning of July. There will be two other ETSers apart from Timbo, Pete and Me. I'll keep you posted.
August 13 2005 - There is a meeting for ETSers on August 14 at 11 am in the Cricket room at the Mean Fiddler, cnr of Commercial & Windsor rd ROUSE HILL in SYDNEY. See you all there!
I spoke to Professor Maddern this morning. The first objective ETS trial in the world is almost complete. They are just having a study translated from Finnish. It will be complete within four months. Great work P.A.S.S (Patients against Sympathetic Surgery) and ASERNIPS (Australian Safety and Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures).
August 20 2005 - The meeting was great. The people who attended are all wonderful people and I think the meetings are a great opportunity to support each other and give each other strength. I was sorry to hear one ETSer couldn't make it at the last minute (from Newcastle) and another didn't realise it was on (from Canberra). However, P.A.S.S is slowly growing in numbers. Thanks everyone for attending...see you next time.
March 3 2006 - P.A.S.S is growing in numbers every week, unfortunately and fortunately. We are working together to do a number of things. Firstly, ASERNIP-s is in constant communication with us and results of the first world objective trial will be known within weeks. Secondly, Tim has graciously used his computer skills to convert a video of Swedish ETS members filmed on a Current Affair style programs so we can upload it onto the site. Other members in Australia who wish to have a copy can get into contact with me or Tim. We will have to have it translated to English so I'm guessing it will be available within a month on this site in the documents section. He has also scanned a 'letter to the editor', published in a journal, written by Dr Teleranta and Lin, which should be up on the site soon. Fourthy, Pete has offered to take over some work on this site, which is very much welcomed. Tim has also suggested we start to formalise our meetings and put more of our individual skills in making this an even more progressive group. This should be done soon enough. Thanks to Ann in England for her latest addition to the treatments section. Welcome to Catorina to P.A.S.S and we hope we can help you in some way. We hope it will get easier for you with some support and good luck with the free consultation a kiniseologist has offered in Melbourne. I will wait for your report on Shelley with anticipation. I welcome more practitioners who have an interest in ETS to get into contact. Shelley was kind enough to agree to giving one free consultation for an ETS patient. This helps enormously.

To access the protocol for the study design, go to the above web address and click on to "log on anonymously' (free access to Australia). Under the heading 'search phase' type in sympathectomy. Select "The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews' and then 'Protocols'. Select number 3 which is the complete protocol for the review. For those who cannot access this protocol I will download it and send it to you if you request. I will also send a copy to Morgan Carllson (FFSO) in Sweden.
The case was reported to the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare who then handed the case over to the police for further investigation. This investigation and the autopsy has not been able to conclude why the woman died, and since other deaths due to ETS have occured, as well as reported side effects, it's been decided to hand over the case to the public prosecutor.
Helge Guthed, member of management on Carlanderska Medical Centre in Sweden, say's that there are no plans to resume ETS operations for now, and they may never be resumed at CMC. This is obviously terrific news for all of us and FFSO.
